Is It OK for Me as a Christian To Visit an LDS Church Service?

If you pass by a Mormon chapel, you’ll see the following writing on the wall near the entrance: “Welcome Visitors.” It’s a safe bet that everyone who knows a Latter-day Saint has received an invitation to read the Book of Mormon or attend a service. If this is the case, should the Christian accept the invitation?

Regarding the Book of Mormon, I encourage them to read this book, which for them is an important Mormon scripture. This way, they can discuss it intelligently. In fact, for Christians who want to be successful in evangelizing, I believe it’s important to know as much as possible about Mormonism and its teachings. Reading articles on the website and in the monthly church magazine (especially the General Conference edition printed in May and November) not only provides a better understanding of what the “fellowship” says, but can also help start a conversation.

Regarding attending an LDS service, why not? The best service you can attend would be the “Fast and Testimony” service on the first Sunday of the month. If an LDS friend or relative invites you, perhaps this could be an opportunity to then invite them to your church. Respond with, “Of course, I’d love to come to your church (possibly the first Sunday of the month, which I’ve heard is interesting, by the way). Would you also be willing to come to my church service to see what it’s all about?”

By doing this, you’ll be provided with plenty of material to discuss over the next few weeks. On the other hand, if you don’t feel comfortable doing this, by all means let the person know you would rather not, especially if this could injure your conscious. This is one of those freedom issues, whether you decide to partake or not. Don’t feel bad if you say you would rather not.
