This is 5-part series was played on Viewpoint on Mormonism in 2011.

Part 1

  • “Can I ask you a question?”
  • “What is your religious background?”
  • “Are you a Mormon?”
    • “How long have you been a Mormon?”
    • “What made you decide to be a Mormon?” (or “What made you decide to stay Mormon?” for lifelong members)
  • “What’s the best part about being Mormon?”
  • “Did you ever go on a mission?” (followed by “Where did you go on your mission?” if applicable)
    • “Were you treated well by evangelicals?”
  • “Have you ever met a born-again Christian before?” (or “Have you ever had an evangelical friend?”)
    • “Have you ever had a born-again evangelical Christian evangelize you?” (or “witness to you” or “share their faith with you?”)

Part 4

  • “If the church (LDS Church) wasn’t true, would you still believe in Jesus?”
    • “If the church wasn’t true, what religion do you think you’d be?”
    • “What about Jesus?” (as a follow-up to prompt further thought if they suggest a non-Christian religion)
  • “For you, what are some of the things you believe that don’t make you feel good, yet you’ve decided to believe anyway?” (e.g., suggesting “Does outer darkness make you feel good?” if they need an example)
    • “For you, what are some of the hardest things to believe in Mormonism?”
  • “What are some ways that you think God speaks?” (to broaden their thinking beyond feelings to include creation, scripture, etc.)

Part 5

  • “What do you think would disqualify a prophet from being true?” (e.g., “What are some things, hypothetically, that a prophet could say or do that objectively cross the line and render them disqualified as a true prophet of God?”)
    • “Have you ever heard of the biblical test of a false prophet?” (as a lead-in to discussing Deuteronomy 13 and 18)
  • “Is there such a thing as wicked prayer to God?” (referencing Proverbs 28:9 to explore the idea that not all prayer is righteous)
  • “How do you know God hasn’t given you over to a delusion?” (drawing from 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 about loving truth versus being deluded)
  • “Are you willing to give up everything for Jesus?” (inspired by Luke 14:25-33 and Mark 10:17-31, pressing the value of Jesus over family or relational “riches”)
